NINETEEN
TRENT
My alarm went off while I was going through pictures on my camera roll.
After dismissing the alarm, I went back to pictures of Jazz. It had been one of the first Iâd taken, a rainy afternoon weâd spent at her place, watching a movie. The rest of the world, my job, and LA were irrelevant thoughts, too inconsequential to intrude on our time together.
A text from Stephen popped up. I dismissed it and continued staring at Jazz.
Ten minutes later, another text popped up.
Swearing at the interruption, I shot Stephen a response.
Youâre a fucking mother hen. Iâm up. Leave me alone.
Putting the do not disturb feature on, I dropped the phone onto the bed next to me and closed my eyes. In a couple of hours, Stephen would be picking me up for the meeting we had with the playwright and producer to go over the score Iâd written.
Usually, Iâd be thrilled. The job hadnât been the most thrilling thing Iâd ever done, but there had been challenges, and Iâd worked hard to stick true to the original music while putting my own stamp on it.
I wasnât excited, though.
I kept thinking about Jazz.
Missing her was like this giant empty void inside me, and I didnât know how to live with it, handle it.
Eying the time, I ditched the immediate option. Getting drunk before nine in the morning wasnât much of an answer, even if it would dull my thoughts.
Tired and miserable with missing Jazz, I flung my arm over my eyes.
Iâd get up and get ready. Soon.
Just not...yet.
